Fairfax County, Virginia — July 28, 2026 Fairfax County Police responded to a domestic incident at a residence in Annandale after receiving a report involving a man armed with a knife. Officers learned that 26-year-old Nehemia Fuentes Banegas had left the residence on foot carrying two knives. Officers established a perimeter and requested assistance from the department's Helicopter and K9 Units. During the search, officers were directed toward a wooded area off Americana Drive. As officers searched the area, Fuentes Banegas suddenly emerged from heavy brush and grabbed an officer's firearm, attempting to disarm him. The officer discharged his firearm while a second officer simultaneously deployed a department-issued Taser. Officers immediately provided medical assistance before Fairfax County Fire and Rescue personnel arrived. Fuentes Banegas was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators later used camera footage through the Real Time Crime Center to retrace his movements and locate the two knives he had reportedly been carrying. After being medically cleared, Fuentes Banegas was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and charged with Attempted Disarming of a Law Enforcement Officer.
