In June 2026, the police chief of Bethel, Ohio, was on vacation in Florida with his wife when Pinellas County deputies found his truck in a parking lot and arrested him on a sealed indictment from back home. His wife was standing a few feet away, and nobody had told her why. On bodycam, a deputy explains the warrants to her: 70 felony counts, which prosecutors say involve one former student from his years as a teacher, between 2005 and 2010. We follow what came next: the ride back to Ohio, his first court appearance, $500,000 bond, his release from jail, and his resignation in July. We also look at the 2023 WCPO I-Team report that found he had been fired, or resigned under threat of being fired, from three of his six previous police jobs, and at the village that hired him as chief in 2021. Chad Essert is charged, not convicted. He has pleaded not guilty and is presumed innocent. His attorney calls the allegations baseless. As of this video, no trial date has been announced.
