On Sunday 09/03/23 at approximately 2319 Hours, we responded to the area for a report of an unresponsive female behind the wheel of her car in the middle of the road. Upon our arrival, we observed what appeared to be an unconscious female driver inside a Kia which was in the middle of the road. It should be noted that as we approached the vehicle, it had a running engine with the headlight on. Officer Puccio and I knocked at the vehicle's windows in an attempt to gain a response from the female drive later identified as Sabrina however, she did not respond. It should be noted that all the doors were locked. I observed that the vehicle's gear selector was on "D"(Drive position). As soon as I relayed the information to Officer Puccio, she let go of the brake and the vehicle started going forward. We tried getting her to stop the vehicle; however, the vehicle went on top of the sidewalk impacting a small tree, wood boarder, and garbage cans causing the vehicle to stop. Due to the circumstance, I attempted to break the rear left window with my baton to gain access to the inside of the vehicle and put the vehicle in park to prevent any further danger to Sabrina as the vehicle was still on and in gear. Sabrina regained consciousness and was able to unlock the doors after multiple attempts. I was able to open the driver's side door and reach inside to put the vehicle in "Park" gear and turned the vehicle off. When Sabrina was asked if she was okay, she stated that she was okay, and asked us what had happened. Sabrina was asked to exit the vehicle and asked if she suffered from any medical condition or if she takes prescribed medication, but she denied suffering from any medical condition or taking prescribed medication. Sabrina was advised of the incident that just happened; however, Sabrina denied recalling what had just occurred. Sabrina appeared to be intoxicated, her eyes were glassy, she appeared to have difficulty standing, she was slurring her words, and I detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from her breath. Based on my observations of Sabrina, she was placed under arrest for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). She was handcuffed behind her back, with the handcuffs double-locked, and placed inside the rear of Vehicle #917 with the MVR activated. She was seat-belted and transported to New Brunswick Police Headquarters to be processed. Once at Police Headquarters, the arrestee, Sabrina, was read her Miranda Rights, to which she understood and signed the form. She was also read the Standard Statement Form for Motor Vehicle Operators, and she declined to take the breath exam. In fact, both of her responses were "no". She was charged with the following: Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) - 39:4-50 Reckless Driving - 39:4-96 Failure to Exhibit Driver's License - 39:3-29A Obstructing Traffic Flow - 39:4-67 Refusal to Submit Breath Samples - 39:4-50.4 ______________________________________________ All videos and case documents were obtained pursuant to the New Jersey Open Public Records Act, N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1 et seq. (P.L. 2001, c. 404). Defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty. This channel is made strictly for educational and news gathering purposes. Not affiliated with any law enforcement agency.
