KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Representatives from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and Michigan State Police gave an update Wednesday on the shooting at a transit center this past weekend. During a joint press conference with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and Michigan State Police, investigators laid out what they know so far and released security and police bodycam footage playing out the violent event. Bodycam footage shows one officer approaching Oliver who fired his pistol, the officer immediately returned gunfire. Oliver was shot in the brief exchange and later died at the hospital. Lt. Shane Criger with MSP said the pistol Oliver used was registered to an unknown party with no involvement in the crime. “The last information I got was that the gun changed hands three times between the last registered owner of the gun and this incident,” explained Lt. Criger. As far as Oliver's motive, that's still not clear. Investigators did learn that Oliver has an extensive criminal history including an armed robbery and assaulting a police officer. “Additionally, we did find a report in 2018 where Mr. Oliver did threaten suicide by cop and he spoke of wanting to end it that way. It is my understanding that he was admitted to a mental hospital at that time, and he was evaluated,” said Lt. Criger. The mayor of Kalamazoo shared his thoughts on the tragedy, calling for hope and mental health support “This is not something that happened to somebody else. This is something that happened to us,” said Mayor David Anderson. Oliver injured three people on Saturday, all of them have since been released from the hospital and are doing O.K. according to police. Investigators say there are people in the security footage they have not yet spoken with that could have valuable information in this ongoing investigation.
