On May 1, 2024. The Mount Horeb Police Department and other law enforcement agencies responded to a subject armed with a gun at the Mt. Horeb Middle School. 14 year old Damian, a student at the school, was outside with a firearm trying to get in. He ran after a teacher entering the building but was unable to get to the door before it closed. He then lit what was believed to be a firework on the side of the building before trying another door. While en route, School Resource Officer Rosemeyer observed twenty to thirty Middle School students (believed to be 6th, 7th, and 8th graders) sprinting eastbound, towards the baseball field at the Mount Horeb Middle School. SRO Rosemeyer said he had never seen anything like this before, the students were not smiling, laughing, or goofing around. He believed the students were in pure fear and running for their lives. Officer Rosemeyer located Damian with a rifle in his hands attempting to enter a door to the school. Rosemeyer screamed as loud as he could, numerous times, for the subject to drop the rifle and move away from the school. Damian ignored SRO Rosemeyer’s commands and turned to pull on the door again. SRO Rosemeyer did not want to shoot toward the subject at the door because he was so close to the school and students were in the building. Damian started walking towards the officer and pointed his rifle at SRO Rosemeyer’s face. He continued to move around his squad to try to create more cover but the subject advanced. SRO Rosemeyer fired one or two shots from his rifle at the subject who was approximately twenty yards away because he feared he was going to die. Damian continued to follow Officer Rosemeyer, pointing his rifle and not obeying commands. Other officers arrived and multiple shots were fired. Damian was pronounced deceased at the scene. The weapon that Damian had was later found to be a pellet gun. A vehicle reportedly operated by the suspect was later found crashed with a black backpack inside containing fireworks that had materials affixed to the outside to create shrapnel. Sgt. Meyer stated they had also collected a 20 pound propane tank, a five pound propane tank, a two-gallon red gasoline container, a jar containing uranium, and two glass containers with wicks described as ‘Molotov Cocktails’ from the vehicle.
