On August 29th, 2024, Sarasota Police responded to a reported dispute at a home on N. Brink Avenue. When officers arrived, they found 40-year-old Cherokee Barrett claiming she had been involved in a fight inside the residence. Officers then learned from the homeowner and another witness that Barrett had allegedly entered the property without permission, gone through belongings, and refused to leave. Both women involved showed minor injuries, and officers determined the altercation was a mutual fight with no battery charges. But when Barrett attempted to leave with the home’s cordless landline phone, officers ordered her multiple times to hand it over so they could determine whether it was stolen. She refused. When officers attempted to detain her, Barrett resisted being handcuffed, was placed into a patrol car, and then slipped out of the cuffs while in the backseat. She again refused orders to exit the vehicle and had to be removed and restrained. Barrett was ultimately arrested for Resisting an Officer Without Violence (F.S.S. 843.02) and transported to jail.
