On May 28, 2024, An officer from the Cadott Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that was believed to be involved in a gas drive off a few days prior. As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver stated his door did not open and the officer went to the passenger side of the vehicle. The driver stated that he had just acquired the vehicle from his nephew (Richard). He said that he did not have an ID on him but verbally identified himself as James. It was later determined that he was lying and that his real name was Richard. The officer noted that Richard had numerous small red spots on his body, face, and legs. Richard was also twitching and appeared to be very nervous. After confirming that Richard was indeed lying about his name, he was ordered to exit the vehicle and stated that he had a meth and fentanyl addiction. He was then searched and placed into a squad car. Richard asked if the officers could take the clothes out of the truck bed and put them in the cab. Richard also admitted that the first name he provided was his uncles. The officers then searched the truck and moved the clothes into the cab. Richard was then able to call his father before being transported to jail. He was charged with Theft, Resisting or Obstructing an Officer, Operating While Revoked, Misdemeanor-Bail Jumping, and Felony-Bail Jumping. Richard was found guilty for theft and all of his other charges got dismissed. He was ordered to pay $473 in fines and $82 in restitution for the stolen gas.
