Champaign County Sheriff Matthew Melvin was arrested for OVI by officers in his own county after allegedly driving erratically, stopping at a green light, and having vomit covering the side of his truck. But the arrest was only the beginning. Once inside the police station, the 28-year law enforcement veteran pushed back against the same OVI process he had spent his career enforcing. Spotlight Moments Officers confront Melvin over the strong smell of alcohol, erratic driving, and vomit covering his truck. Melvin repeatedly delays field sobriety testing before officers finally place their own sheriff under arrest. Police document the truck while still trying to save Melvin a tow fee and make the process easier on him. Melvin refuses the breath test, challenges the booking process, and insists someone else may have vomited on his truck. The sheriff tells one officer, “You and I both done that,” during a heated exchange about drunk driving. Melvin later accepts a plea reducing the OVI charge to physical control and receives 60 days in jail with 57 suspended, a $250 fine, community control, and a six-month license suspension. This case raises a bigger question about accountability when the person being arrested is the same person who once held authority over the officers making the arrest. Then tell us in the comments: what stood out most — the “you and I both done that” comment, the vomit denial, or how many breaks the officers still gave their sheriff?
