On the 23rd of August 2022, at approximately 8:51 am, the Seven Hills Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle striking several mailboxes in a residential area. On arrival, officers spoke with witnesses who were residents of the area. The witness stated his wife had just checked their mailbox and was returning to the house when a large white SUV drove off the road striking the mailbox whilst almost hitting her. The witness also informed the officers after hitting their mailbox the white SUV continued driving while hitting a mailbox of another residence before returning to the road without stopping. While taking witness accounts the white SUV was seen driving southbound with front end damage and debris dragging on the roadway. The witness confirmed to officers that it was the same vehicle they had seen earlier. The officer returned to their patrol vehicle and activated their lights and sirens and began following the white SUV to conduct a traffic stop. When the officer pulled the suspect over he reported that he could “immediately detect an odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from within the vehicle.” Upon questioning the suspect he appeared confused by simple questions and gave the officer different answers each time he was asked the same questions. The suspect's speech was “slowed” and it was reported “he had a difficult time finding his license” which the officer reported he could easily see in the suspect's wallet from where he was looking. When asked how much the suspect had to drink he answered “a lot”. At this point of the traffic stop the officer asked the suspect to exit the vehicle and to perform three Field Sobriety Tests, the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, the Walk and Turn, and the One-Leg Stand. Before starting the three tests the officer gave instructions and demonstrated how to perform the tests to the suspect. When asked if the suspect understood the instructions he confirmed that he did. The suspect performed poorly on all three tests. The suspect stated he was not sure where the frontal damage to the SUV came from and did not seem concerned to the officer when he asked the suspect why fluid was leaking from the SUV. The suspect was then placed under arrest and was placed under Administrative License Suspension and held his Ohio driver’s license for court. Later on, arriving at the police station the suspect agreed to give a breath sample which read 0.264 BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration). The legal limit is 0.08 BAC.
