Police bodycam footage from San Antonio, Texas: officers knock on a second-floor motel room door looking for a man who was showing off a pistol outside a strip center, and when the door opens he points the gun at the officer. This police bodycam footage from the San Antonio Police Department covers the officer-involved shooting at the Luxury Inn on Culebra Road from both officers' body cameras, the motel's surveillance camera and the 911 call. Real bodycam footage, no narration added - the officers, the caller and the department's critical incident briefing carry the video. WHAT HAPPENED January 4, 2023, about 8:30 PM. A 911 caller reports a man who looks drunk carrying a pistol and showing it off outside a strip center in the 1400 block of Culebra Road on San Antonio's West Side, saying "Who's next?" The caller says the man went to hide in a room at the motel next door. Officers Joshua Nicholson (6 years SAPD) and Ryan Tovar (7 years SAPD) arrive; the caller points them to a second-floor room. Officer Nicholson goes up the stairs, knocks, announces "police" and steps back along the walkway while Officer Tovar covers from the parking lot. The door opens and 44-year-old Jose Iruegas points a gun at Officer Nicholson. Both officers fire - about 15 rounds. Iruegas is hit multiple times. The weapon is later identified as a BB gun. OUTCOME Iruegas was taken to the hospital in critical condition and charged with two counts of terroristic threat against a peace officer. He died at the hospital on January 30, 2023; because he had been booked into the Bexar County Jail while hospitalized, the death was reported as an in-custody death. No officers were injured. The Bexar County District Attorney's Office reviewed the shooting, as with every SAPD officer-involved shooting, along with the SAPD Shooting Team and Internal Affairs.
