On February 14, 2024, the Caldwell NJ Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a motor vehicle accident involving an overturned SUV. Officers Kevin O’Neill, Corey Gerard, Nicholas Adamo, Lieutenant George Henderson and other members of the police and fire department responded immediately to the scene to investigate and provide medical assistance. When they arrived, they found a 54-year-old man from Pine Brook, NJ, standing next to an overturned SUV that had veered off the road and crashed into a tree on private property. Although the driver appeared largely uninjured, he did mention some pain in his head. As officers spoke with him, it became clear that he might be impaired. While emergency medical services assessed the driver's condition, officers noticed several open and empty alcohol containers scattered around the overturned vehicle. A victim and a witness told the officers that the driver had been driving erratically shortly before the crash. After the driver declined further medical care, the officers conducted a thorough investigation, captured in this video, which resulted in the driver being taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence. The driver was charged with DUI, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to maintain a lane. His blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was measured at 0.19%, which is more than twice the legal limit. On May 23, 2024, the driver was found guilty of the DUI charge in court. Records showed this was his second DUI offense, with the first occurring in 2005, which no longer counted as a “first offense” due to the passage of time. As a result, he was fined $1,389, sentenced to a one-year license suspension, and required to install an ignition interlock device for two years. Have a substance abuse problem?
