On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at approximately 0213 hours, an officer was on patrol on Truman Ave traveling east. As they approached the 1000 block of Truman Ave, they observed a black Toyota SUV, turning east onto Truman Ave from Grinnell St without any vehicle lights on. The vehicle turned on all necessary lights as it completed the turn. As the SUV slowed at the intersection, a vehicle reached an approximately one car length distance behind it. It then followed the SUV as it turned south onto the street, observing its tires touch the painted road lines several times. The SUV also failed to stop behind the stop bar at stop signs and made excessively wide turns entering the wrong lane. A traffic stop was initiated, engaging emergency lights and sirens. The final stop occurred on the corner of two streets. The officer approached the vehicle on the driver's side, introduced themselves, and explained the reason for the stop, citing multiple violations. They immediately noticed a strong odor of alcoholic intoxicants emanating from the driver's person. The driver's eyes were observed to be glassy. In the passenger seat was another individual, identified by their driver's license. The driver stated they did not believe the observations made about their driving. The officer asked for the driver's license, registration, and insurance. The driver handed over their license and showed their insurance on their phone. They later provided an expired registration card. The officer then walked to their patrol car. Another officer arrived on the scene and stayed with the driver. The officer returned to the driver and asked them to step out of the vehicle. They walked to a designated area and asked the driver if they had consumed any alcohol. The driver admitted to having two drinks earlier in the evening. They rated their level of intoxication as a "two" on a scale of one to ten. The officer asked the driver to perform field sobriety exercises, to which they agreed. The Field Sobriety Exercises were conducted as follows: Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus: The exercise was explained to the driver, who showed understanding. During the exercise, the officer observed several clues indicating impairment. Walk and Turn: The instructions were explained to the driver, who demonstrated difficulty following them correctly. One Leg Stand: The instructions were explained, and the driver struggled to perform the exercise as instructed. She was charged with Possession & Driving Under the Influence.
