Her bags were already on the porch when Tampa police pulled up on Christmas Eve 2023. She wasn't fighting to stay. She wanted to load her car and leave. Her boyfriend wouldn't get off the stoop. The couple had been together seven years and they share kids. She told officers they had just gotten back together, that she had moved out two months earlier, and that she had moved back in a few days before this call. One of the officers picks at that timeline, because it changes whether she has any standing to be in that doorway at all. Florida writes domestic violence broadly. Fla. Stat. 741.28 covers people who live together, people who used to live together, and people who share a child, so a porch argument between two unmarried partners is not a lesser call than the same fight inside a marriage. Two officers spent most of this response trying to hand her a quiet way out. The rest of her things were already in her car, the sidewalk was right behind her, and one of them had already asked her boyfriend to move off the stoop.
