Volusia County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jason Stickels, 44, was arrested by New Smyrna Beach Police on July 6, 2026 at Merk's Bar & Grill. Witnesses said Stickels, off duty and intoxicated, approached a 71-year-old woman seated at the bar, ignored repeated requests for space, and battered her before battering her 77-year-old husband when he stood up. A bystander took Stickels to the ground and held him until officers arrived. No injuries were reported. Stickels was charged with two counts of felony battery on a person 65 years of age or older and released on $10,000 bond. He had served with the Volusia Sheriff's Office since 2004. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said he intended to terminate him; Stickels resigned first. Footage obtained via public records request. No narration.
