On June 16, 2024, surveillance cameras at the Funky Rooster Coffee House & Wine Bar in Key West, Florida caught 63-year-old Elaine Earlywine of Morristown, New Jersey, reaching into the tip jar on the counter and helping herself to approximately $20 in cash. After purchasing a gift card and enjoying a coffee, Earlywine walked out, but a sharp-eyed barista noticed the missing money and immediately called 911. Key West police officers responded quickly and within about two hours tracked Earlywine and her adult daughter down on the 800 block of Duval Street. When officers confronted her with the store's surveillance footage showing the theft clearly on camera, Earlywine refused to admit any wrongdoing. She told officers she may have accidentally bumped the jar but insisted she never took any money, despite the video evidence playing right in front of her. Officers arrested her on the spot on a misdemeanor theft charge. In bodycam footage captured during the arrest, Earlywine can be heard demanding to speak with the employee she stole from and asking the arresting officer if she could simply go back and hand over $20 to make it all go away. That request was denied. Her adult daughter stood on the sidewalk watching as her mother was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police cruiser. Earlywine was transported to the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island and booked on a $1,000 bond. According to Monroe County court records, Earlywine ultimately pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor petty theft charge. She was ordered to pay $223 in court costs and a $40 investigative fee to the Key West Police Department. She received zero jail time. Under Florida law, theft of property valued under $100 can carry up to 60 days in jail and up to $500 in fines, yet she walked away with nothing more than fines totaling $263 for stealing $20 from service workers who depend on tips to make ends meet. 👉 Subscribe for more real police bodycam footage, arrests, and criminal investigations.
