-Roseville, CA. -April 06, 2023. Roseville police on Thursday released several video and audio clips from an April hostage situation and shootout at a park that left one person dead and wounded two others, including a California Highway Patrol officer. CHP has said that officers were serving a felony search warrant on April 6 when the suspect shot one of their officers around 12:30 p.m. at Mahany Park. After Roseville police officers arrived at the park to assist CHP, there was a second gunbattle with the suspect, 35-year-old Eric James Abril, of Roseville. Roseville police have said Abril shot 15 to 20 rounds at officers and the victims. CHP officers fired 15 to 25 rounds at Abril, and Roseville police fired 6 rounds, officials said. It’s unclear how many officers shot their weapons. Abril took two bystanders hostage during the ordeal, police have said. One of the hostages, James MacEgan, was killed during the shooting and his wife was also shot but survived. Roseville police have said that the department is “confident” that Abril shot the two hostages. The four videos and two audio clips that Roseville police released Thursday as part of a public records request cover the second gunbattle and are not a comprehensive documentation of what unfolded. They represent the period when Roseville officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect between 12:38 p.m. and 12:57 p.m. “While a much larger criminal event occurred, the incident involving the discharge of a firearm at a person is the only ‘critical incident’ involving the City of Roseville Police Department,” police said. Roseville police added that none of the CHP officers in the shooting were wearing cameras during their initial contact with the suspect. The officers in body-worn camera footage “engaged suspect Eric J Abril from a long distance” and the suspect is not in view of the camera, police said. The first video shows several Roseville police officers and a sheriff’s deputy with their guns drawn and taking cover behind a police vehicle and a pile of dirt. Another video shows an officer firing their weapon after someone yells “CHP officer down.” In a third video, the sound of several gunshots can be heard and an officer talks about being in a “crossfire” situation. The final video that was released shows an officer setting up a drone. Roseville police said footage from the drone wasn’t included with the public records request because “it didn’t go up in time to capture the critical incident.” Abril, the suspect, was taken into custody and faces charges that include murder, attempted murder of a peace officer, aggravated kidnapping causing bodily harm, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
