Incident report: On August 23, 2024, Detectives with the Albuquerque Police Department attempted a high-risk traffic stop on a white Tesla SUV bearing California license plate. The driver and passenger inside the Tesla were suspects in a shooting that happened earlier in the day, and the plan was to detain them for the investigation. The Tesla was backed into a parking space at the Hilton hotel located at 222 Central Ave Se. Detectives contacted the Tesla from the front using a police car with flashing blue and red emergency lights and parked in front of it. We began giving commands that we were the police and to exit the car. I observed the Tesla accelerate at high speed, drive around the first police car that was making contact with the Tesla, and crash into the second police car (silver Nissan Maxima) head-on. When the driver of the Tesla crashed into the second police car, it hit it with enough force to crash into a third police car (brown Volkswagen Passat) that was parked behind the second police car. Other detectives and I made announcements for the driver and front passenger to get out of the car, and they were both taken into custody. The driver was identified as Leann Aragon, and the front passenger was identified as Anthony Ybarra. Detective A. Romero was sitting inside the second police car when Leann crashed into him, and he sustained head and neck injuries and was transported to Presbyterian Downtown Hospital for treatment. Detective B. Weatherspoon was sitting inside the third police car when the crash occurred, but he did not sustain any apparent injuries from the crash. The police car that made the initial contact with Leann had flashing blue and red lights to signal that it was law enforcement. Detective Romero and Detective Weatherspoon also had their emergency lights on when Leann crashed into their vehicles. All of the detectives involved in this incident, including Detective Romero and Detective Weatherspoon, were wearing police vests with police markings to identify them as law enforcement. From my training and experience, it did appear that Leann was attempting to flee from the Police to prevent them from being apprehended. There was enough time from when we exited the police car and gave commands for Leann to realize we were law enforcement. I checked Leann's name through NCIC, and NCIC advised that she had a total of five felony warrants for her arrest. Those warrants were confirmed through NCIC. Leann was transported to Lovelace Hospital to treat an injury and was cleared for incarceration. She was booked at the PTC for five felony warrants and one new charge. Anthony was transported to Lovelace Hospital for an injury but was discharged. He was arrested for his involvement in the shooting.
