On Thursday, January 9, 2025, officers responded to a Walmart in Washington, Illinois, for a retail theft in progress. Loss Prevention had reportedly observed a male shopper failing to scan multiple items at self-checkout, and the situation quickly escalated when store employees stopped him before he could leave with the unpaid merchandise. In the end, what began as a routine shoplifting stop quickly escalated due to the man's constant excuses and contradictory claims. During the search incident to arrest, officers discovered a controlled substance in his possession, turning a minor retail theft into a much more serious legal situation. Based on the conduct documented in this body camera footage, the following charges could potentially apply: • Retail theft • Possession of a controlled substance The final charges, if any, are determined by prosecutors based on the available evidence and applicable law. All individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
