A 21-year-old woman was shot by an Akron police officer early Friday morning, after allegedly shooting another woman, Akron police said. According to Akron police, the shooting happened at the Oasis Bar in the 600 block of N. Howard Street around 3 a.m. Police were called to the bar after a 21-year-old woman shot another 21-year-old woman, critically injuring her. When officers arrived, a witness, who was a patron inside the bar, flagged them down. Officers said the witness had followed the suspect on foot after the shooting and identified her. Officers said they noticed the suspect had a gun and chased her on foot to a parking lot in the 30 block of E. Cuyahoga Falls Ave. “Officers witnessed what appeared to be the suspect raising her arm in a shooting manner and the officer engaged with gunfire striking the suspect,” said Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett. Officers said they immediately rendered first aid until EMS transported her to Summa Health Akron City Hospital where she is listed in stable condition. The officer involved in the shooting, an approximately two-year veteran, was not injured and per departmental procedure, has been placed on paid administrative leave. Police added a gun was recovered at the scene. The shooting comes after the highly publicized and emotionally charged Jayland Walker shooting and the chief is asking the community to wait until the body camera video is released to make any judgements. “There is a lot of tension in this community right now and to ignore that fact would be naive to do so,” Mylett said, “Of course we want to get the information out as quickly as possible.” Police, by law in Akron, are required to release the body cam, of any police involved shooting within 7 days of the incident. “In this particular case based on what I saw in the video it appears, that the suspect put officers in a situation where they had to make a split second decision,” Mylett said. Agents with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) will now handle the investigation and a separate internal investigation will be conducted by the Office of Professional Standards and Accountability.
