She swung her patrol car around. Lights flashed as she pulled the driver over. The BMW stopped in the lot at Evergreen Tire and Auto Repair, 300 NE Stadium Way. Officer McNannay stepped out and met the driver. Her name was Karly Basham, 21 years old. Karly said she was driving home. A whiff of alcohol hit the air. Other signs pointed to her being impaired. Karly claimed no drinks. Later, she owned up to booze at The Coug that night. Suspicious, the officer asked for sobriety tests. First came the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus check. Next, Walk and Turn. Karly missed heel-to-toe steps. Her turn was sloppy. She skipped the One Leg Stand. They offered a breath test. Karly said no. The smell and poor test performance sealed it. Officer McNannay cuffed her for DUI. They headed to the Pullman Police Department. There, after a lawyer chat, Karly blew into the machine. First tries showed 0.145 and 0.152 BAC. Seconds hit 0.139 and 0.146. Twice the 0.08 limit. The officer noted a marijuana scent too. They fingerprinted and snapped her photo after cell time. Charge: DUI under RCW 46.61.502.
