On March 22, 2022, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, a car dealership reported one of its vehicles stolen. Because the vehicle was fitted with a GPS tracker, officers were led straight to it in broad daylight. When police closed in, the driver abandoned the car and ran, hiding underneath a nearby parked truck. He was quickly located and taken into custody at gunpoint without further incident, then searched and evaluated by medical personnel. Reported charges: possession of a stolen vehicle (New Mexico Statute 30-16D-4), aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer (New Mexico Statute 30-22-1.1), and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer (New Mexico Statute 30-22-1). This is public police body camera footage obtained through a public records request. We add commentary and analysis explaining what is happening and the law behind it.
