A Kent County sheriff’s detective was shot in the hand as he struggled with another man over a rifle during a death investigation. The detective was in stable condition at a local hospital, police said. Kent County sheriff’s Sgt. Eric Brunner said a 19-year-old man is now in custody in relation to the struggle with the deputy and rifle firing. Deputies responded about 2 p.m. Thursday, April 28 to a house in the 500 block of Sunbrook Drive SE, near Eastern Avenue in Gaines Township, on a welfare check. Deputies found an adult male dead inside of the house and then began to investigate. About 90 minutes later, as the investigation continued, a 19-year-old man pulled up in a vehicle. Two detectives went to talk to the person and noticed he had a rifle. A struggle then happened between the man and a sheriff’s detective and the 19-year-old fired the rifle. The detective was struck in the hand. The 19-year-old was then taken into custody without further incident, police said. Brunner said the relationship of the 19-year-old to the deceased person, or the house, is not known. He also said the cause of death is not known for the man found.
