Please like, comment, and SHARE! 🙏 🔍 Episode Overview: On April 27, 2022, at approximately 5:11 PM, Officer Sarah Wexel of the Athens-Clarke County Police attended to a report of a motor vehicle accident on South Milledge Avenue, close to the intersection with Henderson Avenue. The incident involved a collision between a 2012 Ford Focus and a pickup truck. Upon arrival, Officer Wexel engaged with the 27-year-old female driver of the Ford Focus, identified as Arianna, who had rear-ended the pickup truck. During their conversation, Officer Wexel noticed signs of impairment. Arianna claimed she had just left The Local 706, a well-known bar in Athens, but stated that she had not consumed any alcohol prior to driving. The other driver explained to the officer that he had been stopped at a crosswalk to allow a pedestrian to pass when he was hit from behind by Arianna's vehicle. Shortly thereafter, Officer Haydn Asinas arrived at the scene and took charge of the investigation. Arianna confessed to Officer Asinas that she had likely consumed two cocktails before driving and also acknowledged using a prohibited substance. Given his concerns about her impairment, Officer Asinas requested that Arianna step onto the sidewalk to undergo field sobriety tests. Officer Asinas began the assessment with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, where he noted the absence of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus before reaching 45 degrees. He also identified vertical gaze nystagmus. The next test was the Walk and Turn. During this test, Arianna failed to position her feet heel-to-toe and took an incorrect number of steps. The following test was the One Leg Stand, where Arianna struggled to lift her foot correctly and relied on her arms for balance. The Lack of Convergence test revealed a notable lack of convergence. Finally, during the Modified Romberg Balance test, Arianna inaccurately estimated the passage of 30 seconds, taking a total of 56 seconds instead. Following the motor vehicle accident, authorities observed signs of alcohol consumption, including an odor of alcohol, Arianna's own admission to drinking alcohol and another substance, and her poor performance in field sobriety tests. As a result, she was arrested for DUI. After her arrest, Officer Asinas informed her of the Georgia Implied Consent Notice, which led to her agreeing to provide blood samples. Officer Asinas then took Arianna to Piedmont Area Regional Medical Center (PARMC) for the blood draw. Once this was completed, she was taken to the Clarke-County Jail for processing. Arianna received several charges, including DUI – Multiple Substances – Less Safe (40-6-391(a)(4)), Reckless Driving (40-6-390), and Following too Closely (40-6-49), and was later released on a $4,050 bond.
