-Albion, MI. -June 24, 2023. An Albion public safety officer and Calhoun County deputy rescued a 2-year-old child from her own mother Saturday morning, with seconds to spare. Body camera video given to Police Bodycam Videos through a Freedom of Information Act request showed police pull up to a home on Bluestem Court around 10:30 a.m. Children can be heard on video screaming for help. The two responders enter the home and hear commotion behind a closed door. The officer kicks in the door and finds a 35-year-old mother holding her daughter underwater in a bathtub. Police pull the unconscious little girl from the tub and find a stab wound to the chest and neck. "They weren't very deep they didn't appear. But they didn't appear to be life threatening in any way. They provided care to those wounds," Albion Public Safety Chief Scott Kipp said. The officer and deputy are heard offering comforting words to the 2-year-old while giving her CPR. "You’re alright baby. You’re alright baby," the deputy said. The little girl, wearing only a light pink tutu, begins to cry and reaches her hand out to the deputy. "Squeeze my hand honey. We’re here with you," he said. The mother is not seen in the video while the officers work to rescue the child. "[The mother] wasn't combative with the officers in any way shape or form. I know they handcuffed her right away and obviously they were more concerned with the child's well-being at that point," Kipp said. Kipp said they believed the mother and child as well as a 4-year-old had ingested some sort of cleaning fluid. He said the 4-year-old had cuts on him. "We've responded to mental health issues and then domestic issues at the home. The first call that we got there was back in January this year, so I don't know how long they lived there," Kipp said. The two injured kids and the mother were taken to the hospital, "Two of the children were released to the family members, the 8-year-old and the 15-year-old. I don't know with the younger ones what's happening to them at this point. All I know is that they were in stable condition at Motts children's hospital," Kipp said. He said Child Protective Services have been involved with the kids in the past and at one point they were trying to locate the mother and could not at the time.
