The president of Exxon, Sydney Riso, was kidnapped for an $18 million ransom by a local, financially desperate couple who used an environmental threat as a fake motive, and Riso tragically died after only four days due to the inhumane conditions of his captivity. In the quiet New Jersey suburb of Morris Township, on an average April morning in 1992, the world of Exxon International President Sydney Riso vanished. His car was found abandoned, immediately launching a massive multi-agency search involving local police, the prosecutor's office, and the FBI. The investigation quickly revealed the high-powered executive was the victim of a calculated, brutal kidnapping. A mysterious $18.5 million ransom demand arrived, initially disguised as an ecological protest, but agents soon realized they were dealing with a greedy, narcissistic local couple, not international terrorists. The clock was ticking as Riso, who had a known heart condition, was held captive without food or water. The relentless pursuit led investigators through frustrating dead ends and tense, failed ransom drops. It took two agonizing months before the FBI cornered Arthur and Irene Seal, a seemingly normal middle-class pair, in a sting operation.
