On November 9th, 2023, Tyler Jameson Brooks — a 26-year-old lead valet attendant at The Wyndemere Palm Resort in Naples, Florida — was arrested and charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, insurance fraud, and falsifying business records after a guest's own manufacturer telematics app exposed a 2:47 a.m. trip his car should never have taken. Investigators found Brooks had used his solo overnight valet shifts to take at least 61 unauthorized joyrides across 34 different guest vehicles over two and a half years, concealing the mileage in a handwritten notebook that never matched the resort's official records, lending cars to friends for cash on at least six occasions, and billing two accident repairs to the resort's insurance as ordinary valet damage. The scheme was uncovered only because one guest happened to check his car's connected app out of habit and noticed a destination logged forty minutes from the hotel on a night his car should have been parked. Brooks was sentenced to three years in state prison and permanently barred from any hospitality role involving guest property in Collier County.
