On September 11, 2022, John Pappas tragically lost his life, and his wife sustained injuries in a two-vehicle collision on Strausser Street NW in Jackson Township. According to Jackson Township police, 27-year-old Jacob Muiter was speeding and under the influence of alcohol and drugs when he collided with their vehicle around 11 p.m. that night. John Pappas was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife was transported to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, where her condition remains unknown. Jacob Muiter has been sentenced to a minimum of 10 years in prison for the fatal drunk-driving incident. He pleaded guilty in Stark County Common Pleas Court to multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, two counts of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless operation of a vehicle, and speeding. Judge Frank Forchione handed down a sentence of 10 to 13½ years in prison, and Muiter was immediately taken into custody.
