On the 31st of January 2020, reports that three men had been fighting near a shopping centre in Canberra's north. Police officers attended the scene, and nearby was Robert Reid, 38, walking along a street with another man with obvious facial injuries and broken teeth. Police approached, and Reid was calm and chatting with officers. However, things took a turn when Reid's son arrived. Reid's son was under the influence of alcohol and was arrested for driving whilst being alcohol affected. During the arrest, Reid's son threatened his father and in anger, threw a set of car keys into Mr Reid's chest. After the keys were thrown, Reid lunged towards officers, specifically Detective Sergeant Taylor. Reid put his arm around Taylor's neck, choking him and crashing to the ground. Police swiftly jumped onto Reid, tasering him and prying at his arm from Taylor's neck. Reid was soon after arrested and charged with assaulting police. In an ACT Magistrates Court, Detective Sergeant Taylor spoke to the court about the incident and the grievances after it. "It was bloody terrifying," Detective Sergeant Taylor told the court. "I thought I was going to die." Taylor also went on to say that he had been left with post-traumatic stress disorder and could only return to desk duties at work. "The defendant is a coward; he attacked me when my back was turned," he said. Reid pleaded guilty to the assault. He told the court it had been an unusually hot day and he had been drinking at the pub prior to the incident. The court heard he thought he had been protecting his son. His lawyer told the court he had lived a difficult life affected by parents who were involved in alcohol and drugs. The court also heard he had been brought up on a mission and had suffered for being a fair-skinned Indigenous child. ABC (2021) On the 2nd of April 2021, Reid was sentenced to a 20-month intensive corrections order.
