On September 19, 2022, officers from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department were dispatched to Walmart, where loss prevention personnel had detained a 20-year-old female shoplifter. She was accused of shoplifting a tank top (that she tried to wear out of the store) and some hot deli food. Loss prevention was very direct and adamant that the woman needed to "take the ride" to county jail. Officer Austin made the arrest after finding out this was not the first time the woman had been arrested for shoplifting. On September 6, 2024 (nearly 2 years later), she pleaded guilty to theft by shoplifting and was sentenced to 12 months of probation and she was fined $500 plus court costs.
