On May 12, 2025, Anchorage Police officers conducted a late-night traffic stop near Bragaw Street, where they encountered 41-year-old Utuva Alaelua. According to APD, an officer on the passenger side saw a firearm in Alaelua’s lap. Moments later, the officer fired a single shot, resulting in Alaelua’s death. This newly released body-worn camera footage shows the full incident as it unfolded. While APD claims the officer reacted to a visible threat, community members — including an eyewitness — report hearing no verbal warnings before the shooting.
