Police chase bodycam from Pierce County, Washington: a driver takes off from deputies at high speed, bails out and runs through backyards - then hides underwater beneath a pool cover while deputies stand around the pool listening to him breathe. This police chase bodycam release from the Pierce County Sheriff's Office combines dashcam, body camera and Washington State Patrol air unit video (the airplane "Smokey", including infrared) of the pursuit, the foot chase and the moment deputies pull the pool cover off. Pierce County deputies working a multi-agency auto theft emphasis with the Puget Sound Auto Theft Task Force spot a car near 72nd Street and Portland Avenue in unincorporated Tacoma that comes back with an invalid registration. Suspecting a stolen car, they try to stop it. The driver takes off at high speed. Rather than chase through the neighborhood, the sergeant backs off and lets WSP's airplane track the car from above. The driver and a passenger abandon the car near the 7000 block of South M Street and run. The car turns out not to be stolen - but the driver keeps going. With the airplane calling his every move, deputies track him as he jumps fences, climbs onto rooftops and drops into a backyard, where he slides into a swimming pool under the pool cover. Deputies can hear him breathing under the cover and give repeated commands to come out. He refuses. After about 20 minutes they move in, pull the cover back and take him out of the water. OUTCOME The 37-year-old driver was arrested for Felony Eluding, Driving While License Suspended in the First Degree and Obstruction. There was no probable cause to arrest the passenger, who also ran. The vehicle was impounded. No one was hurt. As the sheriff's office put it: if your escape plan ends with hiding underwater, it's probably time for a new plan. SOURCE Pierce County Sheriff's Office (Washington) - "When Hiding Goes Overboard", released August 21, 2026.
