It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At approximately 6:28 PM on November 1, 2023, Corporal Daniel Parrish from the Washington Township Police Department, Morris County, responded to a car crash on Parker Road. He arrived quickly and spoke with the driver’s husband, who said his wife had hit a neighbor’s tree and was very drunk. The neighbor was nearby and told the officer that he called 911 after seeing the vehicle crash into his yard. Corporal Parrish then spoke with her husband and the neighbor. He soon found the driver, identified as Laura. She claimed she swerved to avoid hitting a deer. Soon after, Sergeant James Burns arrived. The officers waited until Laura’s children were out of sight before testing her for alcohol. The first test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN). The officer noticed she struggled to follow moving objects smoothly. She showed distinct nystagmus at maximum deviation and started showing nystagmus before 45 degrees. Next, they performed the Walk and Turn test. Laura almost fell during this and the test was stopped. She refused to take the final test, the One Leg Stand. Because of the crash, her admission of drinking, and her poor performance on the tests, Corporal Parrish placed her under arrest for DUI. A search of her car found an open container. Her vehicle was impounded for 12 hours under John’s Law. Parrish took Laura to the police station for processing. At the station, Laura was read the standard driver’s statement. She agreed to give breath samples. Her Alcotest showed her blood alcohol level was 0.30%, nearly four times the legal limit of 0.08%. She was released to her husband after he signed a liability form. She received tickets for DUI, reckless driving, lane violation, and open container. Court records show that on March 21, 2024, Laura pleaded guilty to DUI. Her reckless driving charge was reclassified as careless driving. She spent 48 hours at a driver program, used an ignition interlock for three months, and paid $930 in fines.
