Around 3:29 AM on September 11, 2022, Officers Da Cruz and Veloso observed a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander parked partially on the street and partially on the sidewalk, blocking a driveway on North Broad Street. Officers approached and found a female driver slumped over the steering wheel and a male asleep in the passenger seat. After opening the doors, officers reported a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage and observed an open 1.75L Milagro tequila bottle on the front passenger floorboard. The driver, identified as Vanessa (32), appeared confused upon waking and officers reported red/glassy eyes and an odor of alcohol. Additional units arrived for assistance. Officers conducted Standard Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs). Based on the investigation and the driver’s performance, Vanessa was arrested for suspicion of Operating Under the Influence (39:4-50). Vanessa was transported to police headquarters. After being read the N.J. Attorney General’s Standard Statement and Miranda Rights, she refused to provide a breath sample. She was issued summonses including Operating Under the Influence, Open Container, and Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test, among others, and was released to her father. ⚖️ Reminder: An arrest/charge is not a conviction.
