When officers arrived, they made contact with 36-year-old Ahtume McCollum and attempted to speak with him to assess the situation. During the encounter, officers observed that McCollum was armed with a knife and immediately issued verbal commands instructing him not to reach for the weapon. According to police, McCollum continued to move toward the officers as they attempted to detain him. A physical struggle followed, and officers took McCollum to the ground. During the struggle, one officer attempted to deploy a taser, but it was ineffective. Authorities say McCollum then reached for the knife and attempted to stab one of the officers. The officer was wearing a protective vest, which prevented the blade from penetrating and causing serious injury. In response to the immediate threat, the second officer discharged his firearm, striking McCollum. Officers immediately began rendering medical aid while awaiting emergency medical services. McCollum was transported to the University of Louisville Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The incident is being reviewed in accordance with department policy.
