New DNA evidence reportedly connected James Vanest to the 1981 murder of Debbie Miller. When U.S. Marshals and local officers arrived at the Rodeway Inn to arrest him, Vanest allegedly pointed a handgun at officers and barricaded himself inside Room 220. The situation quickly escalated into an hours-long standoff involving SWAT teams, negotiators, chemical munitions, armored vehicles, drones and intense exchanges of gunfire. One officer was wounded, motel guests were trapped inside nearby rooms, and a police drone was shot down. Investigators later reported that nine officers fired their rifles and that 147 police rifle casings were recovered, along with 15 casings from inside Vanest’s room. Multiple firearms, loaded magazines and ammunition were also discovered. Authorities concluded that Vanest fired first and continued shooting toward officers and the surrounding public. The officers’ use of deadly force was ruled legally justified, and no criminal charges were filed.
