On January 9, 2026, in Los Angeles California, Highway Patrol officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling southbound on US-101 near the I-110 interchange after observing the driver speeding and weaving across lanes at approximately 90 mph in in a 55-mph zone. The vehicle exited the freeway and stopped on Downey Road, where officers made contact with the driver. Officers detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage and observed additional objective signs consistent with alcohol impairment. The driver was asked to perform field sobriety tests, during which officers documented multiple indicators of impairment. A preliminary alcohol screening (PAS) test produced a result of approximately 0.215% BAC, nearly 2.7× the legal limit in California. A subsequent chemical breath test recorded results of approximately 0.206% and 0.199% BAC. Further investigation revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen out of the Los Angeles area. Officers also located a professional key programming tool inside the vehicle, commonly associated with vehicle theft activity. The driver was arrested and booked in the LAPD 77th division jail on the following charges: VC 10851(a) — Unlawful Taking or Driving of a Vehicle VC 23152(a) — Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol VC 23152(b) — Driving with a BAC of 0.08% or Higher VC 14601.1(a) — Driving with a Suspended or Revoked License PC 466 — Possession of Burglary Tools Enhancement: VC 23578 — BAC of 0.15% or Greater All individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
