On September 8, 2026, at approximately 8:17 p.m., deputies with the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported stabbing at a residence on Barbara Lane in Kittitas, Washington. Dispatch advised that a man had allegedly been stabbed by his brother and was bleeding from a wound to his neck. The suspect, later identified as Erik Van Cleave, was believed to still be inside the neighboring residence where the incident occurred. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the victim, Chad Van Cleave, who had suffered a deep cut to the side of his neck. According to the police report, the incident began during an argument between the two brothers over Erik's jealousy involving a woman Chad had recently met. Chad told deputies that Erik became aggressive, pulled out a knife, and attacked him. Despite his injuries, Chad managed to escape and seek help from nearby neighbors before being transported to the hospital for medical treatment. As deputies continued their investigation, they attempted to contact Erik, who remained inside the residence and refused to surrender. Authorities obtained a search warrant and requested assistance from the Kittitas County Regional Tactical Response Team. Deputies attempted to communicate with Erik using phone calls and public announcements, but he continued refusing to come outside. After several hours without a response, tactical officers deployed tear gas into the residence and eventually forced entry. Officers located Erik hiding underneath a blanket on a couch and took him into custody. He was transported for medical evaluation before being booked into the Kittitas County Jail on suspicion of first-degree domestic violence assault, fourth-degree domestic violence assault, interfering with the reporting of domestic violence, and resisting arrest. Watch the body cam footage as Kittitas County deputies respond to the stabbing, investigate the confrontation between two brothers, and work alongside tactical officers to bring a lengthy standoff to an end.
