On January 1, 2026, California Highway Patrol officers conducted a traffic stop on US-101 north of Sarina Road in Smith River, California, after observing a vehicle with a non-functioning license plate light. Officers made contact with the driver and immediately detected signs consistent with alcohol impairment, including the odor of an alcoholic beverage and objective indicators observed during a preliminary check. The driver was asked to perform a series of field sobriety tests, during which officers observed multiple signs of impairment, including lack of smooth pursuit, missed steps, and balance issues. A preliminary alcohol screening (PAS) test was administered at the scene, producing breath results of approximately 0.184% and 0.181% BAC, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08% in California. Following the officer's investigation, the driver was placed under arrest and later provided additional chemical breath samples of approximately 0.17% BAC. The driver was transported and booked into the Del Norte County Jail without further incident on the following charges: CVC 23152(a) — Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol CVC 23152(b) — Driving with BAC of 0.08% or Higher CVC 23578 — BAC of 0.15% or Higher Enhancement California Highway Patrol Officers Involved: Officer E.
