An officer was on routine patrol when they observed a vehicle traveling well over the posted speed limit. The officer followed and confirmed the vehicle’s speed using a calibrated speedometer before initiating a traffic stop. During contact with the occupants, the officer observed two smoked marijuana cigarettes in plain view within the center console. The passenger became verbally hostile and made several negative comments toward the officer without provocation. When the officer instructed both occupants to exit the vehicle for a search, the passenger initially refused, claiming the officer needed a warrant. After multiple commands, the passenger eventually complied but, upon exiting, pushed the officer in the chest. The officer performed a controlled takedown and placed the passenger under arrest for battery on a law enforcement officer. While being searched, the passenger resisted and attempted to kick an officer but was restrained. The passenger continued to resist while being placed into the patrol car and had to be physically assisted inside. A minor abrasion occurred during the arrest, which was documented with photographs. The passenger was transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation before being taken to the county jail. The entire incident was captured on the officer’s body-worn camera.
