On July 10, 2025, at approximately 1 a.m., Sgt. Daniel Grossi was flagged down by a security guard at Madd Hatter, 221 Washington St., where a man was trying to get into the bar, despite being denied entry. Police Officers Jaydan Gonzalez and Donovan Ortiz responded to the scene to assist. The man denied having any forms of identification on him. He eventually provided the officers with documentation and was identified as 40-year-old Roberto Cancel of the Bronx. It was discovered he had multiple outstandings warrants for his arrest. A search incident to arrest located two glass cylindrical tubes with burnt ends. He was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters where he refused to be fingerprinted and photographed. Warrants out of Bayonne and Highlands were confirmed. Cancel was additionally charged with possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia and refusal to submit fingerprints. He was ultimately transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty
