People should understtand their constitutional rights to safeguard their freedoms, especially regarding when and why they may be asked to identify themselves to law enforcement. In US states that are not stop-and-identify, people don’t have to present their IDs to the police, unless a reasonable articulable suspicion of a crime can be verbally formulated. If they are calm and informed, then whenever interacting with authorities, citizens can prevent unnecessary escalation. I think it’s super important that respect is mutual. And documenting encounters with law enforcement is a necessity, to hold officers accountable and to make their actions transparent. Because sometimes officers fail to either understand or to adhere to legal standards. And in any democracy, justice is blind, and can’t be bent according to the personal will or preferences of certain police employees.
