On December 8, 2024, at approximately 11:18 PM, Deputy Murphy responded to a residence regarding a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, Deputy Murphy made contact with John in the front driveway. As the deputy approached, John became quite upset and began shouting. When asked about the situation, John insisted it was a personal matter between him and his wife. He then approached the deputy aggressively, with his fist clenched. The deputy instructed John to step back, which he did momentarily. Still angry and yelling, John explained that he verbally argued with his wife over personal issues. He admitted to having slapped and shoved her during the disagreement. John then told the deputy to leave and turned to go into his house. The deputy instructed him to stop, but John continued towards the front door. As the deputy attempted to prevent him from entering, John pulled away and clenched his fist with his vehicle keys in hand. When the deputy asked John to place his hands behind his back, he tried to conceal them in his jacket pocket. The deputy then placed John against the outside wall of the residence and struggled to maintain control. Ultimately, the deputy was able to restrain John and escorted him to the patrol vehicle, placing him in the rear compartment. The deputy then spoke with John's wife, who explained that John's anger stemmed from the television in their bedroom not working. When she asked him to turn off the television in the living room, which disturbed her sleep, John became extremely upset and began pounding on her bedroom door. After she opened the door, a verbal argument ensued, during which John swung his fist and struck her multiple times on the head before shoving her. She managed to escape to a neighbor's house and called for help. Following the investigation and the statements gathered, the deputy determined John to be the primary aggressor in the situation. He was transported to the Flagler County Jail without incident and charged with obstructing without violence and battery against a person over 65.
