It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: It was 1:42 AM on July 4, 2024. Officer Michael Cappello saw a black Nissan Rogue swerve over the Route 88 double lines. The car was going east near Herbertsville Road. He followed the car. Near Benedict Street, it crossed the lines again. The Rogue stopped past the line at a red light. It then turned left onto Bay Avenue, heading north. Officer Cappello pulled the car over near the 900 block of Bay Avenue. He spoke to the driver, Rebecca, and asked for her papers. Rebecca explained her trip to Officer Cappello. She had picked up her passenger from the Idle Hour on Route 88. She said she was driving home. Officer Cappello smelled alcohol on Rebecca's breath as they talked. He also noticed other signs of impairment. Officer Ipploito arrived to help. At first, Rebecca claimed she had not been drinking. Then, she admitted she had consumed alcohol earlier. Officer Cappello asked her to say the alphabet from ‘D’ to ‘T’. Next, he asked her to count backward from 33 to 13. She said the alphabet right. However, she miscounted, stopping at 11 instead of 13. Suspecting she was impaired, officers asked Rebecca to exit the car. They wanted her to do field sobriety tests. Officer Cappello started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. He watched Rebecca's eyes. They did not move smoothly. At maximum deviation, her eyes jerked. This started before 45 degrees. He saw no vertical nystagmus. Next, Rebecca tried the One Leg Stand test. She could not raise her foot right. She put her foot down early. Finally, she did the Walk and Turn test. She did not touch heel-to-toe each time. Also, she failed to count aloud. She took the wrong number of steps, too. Rebecca's driving was all over the place. Patrolman Macarico smelled booze. She even said she drank alcohol before getting behind the wheel. Rebecca failed the roadside tests too. Macarico arrested her for driving under the influence. J.C. & Daughters Towing took her car. It was held for 12 hours because of John’s Law. She then went to the Hopatcong Police Department. There, they would process her further. Rebecca sat in the Point Pleasant Police Department. An officer read her the Motor Vehicle Operators Statement. She agreed to give breath samples for testing. The Alcotest showed a BAC of 0.198%. This was more than double the 0.08% legal limit. Officers finished their paperwork. Rebecca was released to her mother. Her mother signed the Potential Liability Warning Form. Rebecca got summonses. These included operating under the influence. She also got summonses for reckless and careless driving.
