On the morning of August 18, 2022, around 8:25 AM, a Lyon County, Iowa deputy responded to a report of an erratic driver and stopped a vehicle that was drifting within its lane and traveling well below the speed limit, about 25 in a 55. The driver admitted she had been drinking, with her last drink barely an hour earlier. After standardized field sobriety tests and a roadside breath test, she was arrested for operating while intoxicated, a first offense. She later registered well over the legal limit on a calibrated breath test, and her driving privileges were revoked for 180 days. Reported charge: Operating while intoxicated, first offense (Iowa Code 321J.2). This is public police body camera footage obtained through a public records request. We add commentary and analysis explaining what is happening and the law behind it. The footage has been edited and condensed for length. The order of events is preserved.
