In this GravefileTV audit, we perform a legal analysis of a former police officer's DUI arrest. We examine the field sobriety test procedures and the subsequent criminal law implications. This case highlights the complexities surrounding a criminal record, even for those in law enforcement. He was the chief of police. He had a prior DUI on his record. And he had his 10-year-old daughter in the backseat when he drove into a tree on a rural Oklahoma road. This is April 28th, 2024. LeFlore County, Oklahoma. Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers arrived at the scene of a one-car accident. A car against a tree. A man standing nearby — visibly impaired. The man was Kurt Morsund. The chief of police of Wister, Oklahoma. On dashcam — recorded by the troopers who came to help him — Morsund can be heard saying three words that tell you everything about what he believed would happen next. "My life is over." Then — and this is the moment that defines this footage — he turned to the troopers and said: "I want y'all to be cool about this. It was a one-car crash." A police chief. Asking fellow law enforcement to let it go. His daughter was ten years old. She was in that car when it hit that tree. He was charged with aggravated DUI and child endangerment. His bond was set at ten thousand dollars. He resigned from the Wister Police Department shortly after this footage was released. The officer who arrested him did exactly what he was supposed to do — the same thing Morsund would have expected any officer under his command to do. He didn't let it go. Was this about the badge — or would he have asked anyone to be cool about it?
