A Houston Police Department officer shot and killed a man Thursday in what authorities described as a shootout in Second Ward. Police were searching for the man around 5 p.m., shortly after he had allegedly robbed an insurance company on Harrisburg and an ice cream shop on Brady. The man used a handgun during the robberies, and left the businesses riding an electric scooter, said Larry Satterwhite, the Houston Police Department’s executive assistant chief. Following the second robbery a patrol officer in a car spotted the man and began to follow him, police said. The officer attempted to stop the man near the intersection of Eastwood and Brady, where the shooting happened, Satterwhite said during a briefing. The officer pulled in front of the man and ordered the man to stop, police said. The man refused, ran away, and hid behind a tree before shooting his gun at the officer as he fled, police said The officer fired his weapon and shot the man, killing him, Satterwhite said. It wasn’t clear how many shots were fired in the exchange. The officer wasn’t wounded. Investigators on Thursday night were looking for evidence of damage from the shootout in the residential area. Police on Friday identified the officer as Alfonso Yanez, a 30-year veteran of the police department assigned to the Eastside division. The man who was shot was described as being in his late 20s or early 30s. His name wasn’t immediately released. At the news conference, Satterwhite said the man was also a suspect in three other recent robberies in the area, but didn’t provide details about when and where they occurred.
