On January 7, 2022, officers responded to a convenience store after security detained a suspected shoplifter who had allegedly concealed multiple items before entering the restroom and attempting to exit without paying. Store staff reported observing the woman take food and personal items into the bathroom without permission and later attempt to leave the store. The total value of the stolen merchandise was approximately $5.47, and the items were recovered and returned to the business. While being detained, the suspect repeatedly ignored commands to keep her hands visible and continued reaching into her pockets despite warnings that she may be armed with a knife. When officers attempted to place her in handcuffs, she pulled away, grabbed an officer’s hand, and threw herself onto the ground in an effort to avoid being restrained. Officers were eventually able to gain control after removing jewelry that was interfering with the handcuffs. During the search, the stolen items were located in her hoodie pocket. She later apologized, stating she had not eaten for two days. She was permanently banned from the store and transported to jail, where she was charged with petty theft, battery on a law enforcement officer, and interfering with law enforcement / resisting arrest.
