It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At 2:42 a.m. on February 25, 2025, Officer Ahmed Elnakib from the Clifton Police Department got a call. He headed to a car crash with injuries near Route 46 West and Route 21 South. Dispatch said a car driving the wrong way on Route 46 West had slammed into another vehicle. Lieutenant Anderson showed up, along with Officers Fisher and Rojas. Officer Rojas reached the crash victim first. The man said his leg hurt bad. His 2007 Honda Accord had taken a hit from a 2016 Honda CR-V coming head-on the wrong way. Paramedics soon took the victim to the hospital for checks. Officer Elnakib talked to State Police right away when he arrived. They had beaten everyone there. They were close by on another job. Then Elnakib approached the CR-V driver. Her name was Paola Velez. As they chatted, he smelled booze on her breath. He spotted other signs she might be drunk. Paola owned up to drinking at a Clifton bar that night. Medics came to check her out. She turned down any help. With that, Officer Elnakib asked her to do sobriety tests on the spot. The first one was the Walk and Turn. Paola missed touching heel to toe on her steps. She wobbled and lost balance. Next came the One Leg Stand. She didn't lift her foot right. It hit the ground too soon. The last tests asked her to count forward then backward. She messed those up too. The crash, her booze admission, and the failed tests added up. Officer Elnakib arrested Paola for driving drunk. Officer Rojas patted her down. They put her in the patrol car. Anthony’s Towing hauled her CR-V away. It stayed locked for 12 hours under John’s Law. Officer Rojas drove Paola back to the Clifton station. There, they read her the standard form for drivers. She first said yes to breath tests. But she wouldn't play along with the Alcotest machine. That led to a refusal charge. Once done with paperwork, they let Paola go. A sober friend took her home. He signed the liability warning for her.
