Officers believed the suspect could be armed. When they attempted to stop the vehicle on Interstate 96 in Ingham County, the driver refused to pull over. Traffic was already congested, forcing officers to reposition as the SUV used the highway shoulder to bypass backed-up vehicles. Additional units joined the pursuit as it moved westbound, with officers relaying speed, lane changes, and the suspect’s movements inside the vehicle over the radio. As the chase continued, officers reported the driver repeatedly reaching toward the passenger seat area. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Speeds exceeded one hundred miles per hour as the SUV weaved between lanes, at times slowing down abruptly before accelerating again. Deputies later described the behavior as erratic and deliberate, raising concerns for both officer and public safety. The situation escalated further when the driver used a highway turnaround to cross the median, entering the eastbound lanes and driving directly into oncoming traffic. Officers immediately broadcast warnings as the SUV traveled the wrong way, narrowly avoiding collisions with other motorists who had no warning of the danger ahead. With the pursuit now crossing into Livingston County, sheriff’s deputies coordinated to block entrance ramps and limit additional traffic exposure. Dashcam footage shows the SUV eventually leaving the roadway near an entrance ramp, entering a grassy area as deputies executed controlled maneuvers to end the chase. The vehicle came to a stop. The driver exited, throwing his hat to the ground and continuing to gesture toward officers as they issued repeated commands. Deputies ordered him to raise his hands and get on the ground. When he failed to immediately comply, officers deployed a Taser, bringing him under control. The suspect was taken into custody without further resistance and later turned over to Bath Township police. No officers and no members of the public were injured during the incident. Authorities later confirmed the pursuit stemmed from a domestic violence investigation. The incident underscores the risks posed when suspects escalate encounters onto public roadways, particularly when wrong-way driving places uninvolved motorists in immediate danger. It also highlights the coordination required between agencies to bring high-risk pursuits to a controlled conclusion.
