Viewer discretion is advised. =================== On February 3, 2026, Reno Police officers responded to a welfare check at the Wells Avenue Bridge near Kuenzli Street after multiple 911 callers reported a man sitting and walking on the bridge in traffic. Officers contacted 27-year-old Michael J. Johnson and spent approximately 20 minutes attempting to persuade him to move to a safer location while closing southbound traffic lanes to protect both him and passing motorists. During the encounter, officers repeatedly instructed Johnson to keep his hands visible and to drop a pocket knife they believed he was carrying based on prior contacts. As officers moved in to detain him, Johnson removed a tow chain and charged toward an officer while swinging it. Multiple officers fired their weapons, striking Johnson. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
